CHALLENGE
That objects break and degrade is a fundamental aspect of life, but the objects in our daily lives shouldn’t be designed to do so. Finding a way to be environmental in the environment while still being comfortable was the problem I was trying to solve with this chair design.
I’ve coined the term “planned sustainability” for this project. The opposite of planned obsolescence, this object is meant to be long-lasting and have little impact on the environment. Ideally, I would like to make this chair using second-hand materials such as aluminum, recycled nylon, and recycled HDPE. HDPE can be found in soap containers, 5 gal buckets, and plastic grocery bags, and I could melt them down into a more solid state and create a chair. These materials are not recycled as much as they should be and often end up in the landfill and the ocean. (See Plastic Skateboard for more on fabrication with recycled plastic.
